Holiday breakfast cheer: Canadian Tire donates kitchen supplies to ONEXONE First Nations School Breakfast Program

Tor, ON, 12.18.12 While the holidays can be a time of festive feasts, there are many in Canada who will continue to struggle with food insecurity. Just in time for the holidays, Canadian Tire is helping give the gift of a better meal time  by donating kitchen supplies to the ONEXONE First Nations School Breakfast Program.

Hundreds of children at three First Nations schools (Sakastew School in Pukatawagan, MB; Wasaho First Nations School in Fort Severn First Nation, ON and St. Andrew's School in Kaschechewan, ON) will benefit from the new kitchen supplies. The three schools are part of the ONEXONE First Nations School Breakfast Program, a unique Canadian program providing a nutritious breakfast for children each and every school day. ONEXONE, with generous support from its partners in the Assembly of First Nations and PepsiCo Canada (Quaker & Dole), is currently serving over 3,000 breakfasts every school day. The healthy breakfasts have a measurable positive impact on learning, creativity, improved test grades, and most importantly, attendance.

"Over the holidays, it can be easy to forget that so many in Canada are still in need of the most basic of food essentials," said Joey Adler, Founder and Chair of ONEXONE. "We are grateful for the ongoing support of partners like Canadian Tire and PepsiCo Canada, who help ONEXONE give the gift of a healthy breakfast every school day to children in need."

The kitchen supplies will go a long way at St. Andrew’s School in Kaschechewan, Ontario, where their original school building burned down a few years ago. The students go to school in temporary portables without a kitchen, so the gifts of kettles and utensils from Canadian Tire means nutritious instant oatmeal can be enjoyed every school day.
